In 1874, General George Custer and his troop discovered gold near Deadwood South Dakota, prompting the Black Hills gold rush and bringing in thousands of hopeful miners virtually overnight.

Deadwood was crowded and lawless, the site of many dastardly deeds including the murder of Wild Bill Hickock by Jack McCall in 1876.
